The itinerary dedicated to Chiaravalle begins in the historic center, where art, civic memory, and symbolic landmarks recount the birth and development of a city closely linked to the figure of Maria Montessori.
The visit starts in front of Palazzina Marulli, an elegant 19th-century villa designed by architect Francesco Tamburini. Set within a small urban park, the villa features richly decorated interiors and today houses the Municipal Library, which has become an important cultural center for the city.
Just a few steps away is Casa Montessori, the birthplace of the renowned educator. Overlooking Piazza Mazzini, the building now serves as a study center dedicated to her life and educational method and represents a core element of the city’s identity.
Continuing southward, visitors reach the monumental complex of the Abbey of Santa Maria in Castagnola, founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. The quiet atmosphere of the 18th-century cloister leads into the permanent Archaeological Exhibition, which preserves Bronze Age artifacts—remarkable evidence of the area’s most ancient origins.
Returning toward the heart of the city, the itinerary leads to the Tullio Giacconi Theater, a refined 19th-century building restored to its original splendor and now a vibrant cultural hub hosting events and performances. Nearby stands the Triponzio Bridge, a historic crossing point and a symbolic place reflecting the city’s urban transformations between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The route then reaches the area where the Old Hospital once stood, the city’s first healthcare facility, rebuilt and renovated several times over the centuries and deeply marked by the wartime events of 1944.
Proceeding along Corso Matteotti, visitors encounter the Church of St. Joseph, known as the “Church of the Dead,” associated with the Confraternity of the Good Death and 19th-century civic rituals. A short distance away rises the Aqueduct Tower, a true urban landmark that ensured the city’s water supply for decades.
At this point, before leaving the historic center and continuing by car to the next sites, visitors may enjoy a pleasant food break before setting off again.
Resuming the itinerary, the tour continues by car to the German bunker on Via Puccini, a rare example of World War II military architecture, with narrow corridors and low ceilings that bear tangible witness to the wartime events that also affected Chiaravalle.
The itinerary concludes at the Manifattura Tabacchi, the oldest tobacco factory in Italy and the beating heart of the city’s history. Partly rebuilt after the war by engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, the factory is the place where, for generations, the famous sigaraie worked—women who became protagonists of female emancipation and enduring symbols of the city’s identity. Every day at noon, the historic siren still marks the time, recalling the deep bond between the factory and the local community.
After completing the cultural tour, those who wish can enjoy some shopping in one of the shops in the city center before bidding farewell to Chiaravalle.
This itinerary offers a comprehensive view of the city of Maria Montessori, bringing together history, memory, architecture, and testimonies of labor and innovation that have shaped Chiaravalle’s identity.

Palazzina Marulli – Library
Villa Marulli is a youthful work by the architect Francesco Tamburini. Born in Ascoli Piceno in 1848, he graduated from Bologna with a degree in Engineering and then moved to Argentina in 1883, where he was appointed Inspector General of National Architecture.
Montessori's House

Montessori’s House
Casa Montessori in Chiaravalle, located at no. 10 Piazza Mazzini in an early 19th century building, is the birthplace of Maria Montessori, who was born here on 31 August 1870. Her father, Alessandro Montessori, originally from Ferrara, had moved to Chiaravalle around 1860 to work as a control manager at the local tobacco factory.
Today, the building is owned by the municipality and has become an important centre for Montessori studies.
Abbey of Santa Maria in Castagnola
La tappa prevede le seguenti destinazioni:
Abbey of Santa Maria in Castagnola
The Abbey of Santa Maria in Castagnola, an elegant abbey complex located in Chiaravalle in the province of Ancona, was built by Cistercian monks around 1172 on the remains of a pre-existing Benedictine monastery destroyed by the Saracens. The name “In Castagnola” derives from the dense oak forest, called “selva di castagnola”, that once stretched south of Chiaravalle.
Founded in the 12th century, the abbey is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture in Italy, although its interior is Gothic in style. In past centuries, it was of crucial importance for the birth and development of the town of Chiaravalle, which grew up around it. Since 1985, the abbey lost its monastic function and was transformed into a parish seat, being included in the diocese of Senigallia, within the vicariate of Chiaravalle.
Today, unexpectedly for a monastery, the church is located right in the centre of the town to which it gave its name. The façade is distinguished by its splendid Romanesque architecture, characterised by a central rose window with a “crooked” cross. The interior is divided into three naves, supported by twelve cruciform pillars, with Gothic arches and decorated arcades defining the spaces once reserved for the monks.
Among the various masterpieces kept in the abbey, the “Baptism of Jesus”, dating back to the end of the 16th century, stands out. On the right side of the church is the cloister with the “Porta dei Monaci” (Monks' Door), reopened in 2016 after being walled up during the Napoleonic era in the 19th century. Although not the original, the door is the result of a fine design by the students of the Mannucci Institute, which skilfully blends ancient and modern elements, representing a passageway and a link between the sacred and the profane, between the clergy and the community. The Abbey of Chiaravalle is considered the soul and heart of the quiet town.

Tullio Giacconi Theater
The Tullio Giacconi Theater in Chiaravalle, inaugurated in 1854 at the behest of the local bourgeoisie, features a horseshoe-shaped plan and 19th-century decorations. Severely damaged by bombing in 1944, it was renovated in the 1990s, maintaining the original structure and recovering the splendour of the mythological decorations. Today it is a lively cultural centre for the town.
Bridge over the Triponzio
La tappa prevede le seguenti destinazioni:
Bridge over the Tripontius
Today the “bridge” area is very different indeed from the late nineteenth century. Originally built in wood, after the disastrous flood of 1897 it was rebuilt in two-bay masonry, and at the end of the ‘50 years, the stream was partially covered with a tomb on which Viale Montessori stands today. In the ‘70s, the current condominium, now home to a banking institution, was built on the site of Villa Cavallini.
Old Hospital
La tappa prevede le seguenti destinazioni:
Old hospital
Where the Comprehensive Institute “Maria Montessori” stands today, the Chiaravalle hospital named after the Prince of Piedmont was once located. The history of the Chiaravalle health service dates back to 1754, when Cardinal Nereo Corsini granted the institution of the local doctor, that is, someone who provided free healthcare to the poor and, in exchange for payments established by a fee schedule, to other citizens. The hospital itself began to take shape in the ‘40s and was inaugurated in 1857. Between 1929 and 1934 it underwent restoration work which made it one of the best in the province of Ancona. During the war, on January 17, 1944, it suffered significant damage due to bombing by Allied troops, and 34 victims were later counted under its rubble. Much of the equipment was taken away by the Germans, who then used the hospital premises to hide the weapons.

Water tower
La tappa prevede le seguenti destinazioni:
Water tower
The building, now called the tower, is an important symbol located in the center of the town of Chiaravalle, almost marking the direct line of Corso Matteotti with the War Memorial. The first aqueduct was built in 1905 based on a design by engineers Argnani and Piccioni, drawn up in 1903. The water came from an Esino aquifer via an 8-meter-deep well. The tower's functionality was expanded in 1952, making it essential for further population growth and the damage suffered during the war. The expansion project was drawn up by engineer. Giorgetti and allowed an adequate water supply to the Municipality until the years ‘60.
German bunker
La tappa prevede le seguenti destinazioni:
German bunker
The Chiaravalle bunker, on Via Puccini, is a tangible testimony to the dark times of the Second World War: composed of two corridors connecting to a central room, it was built as a shelter from the bombings, but was intended primarily for the German military. Through the narrow door, which had to be lowered to enter, one immerses oneself in a labyrinth of narrow, low corridors, designed to protect soldiers from enemy bombing and incursions. It was erected under the command of the German Todt and, in the end, exploited only once during an air raid alert. Tons of concrete and railway tracks were used to build it.
The Manifattura Tabacchi
La tappa prevede le seguenti destinazioni:
La Manifattura
The Manifattura Tabacchi of Chiaravalle is the oldest in Italy.
It was opened on 15 September 1759 and since its inception has been the hub of urban, economic and demographic growth in the city.
To date, it is the only one still open.
